Line of Events

Abel is a high school student who has a hard time concentrating on his graduation, while he is hopelessly in love with his best friend, Janka. Due to the film’s subject matter, the Hungarian government provided no support for the film, so its budget and staff were small.

The premise is a bit far-fetched, which detracts from the story

Last year, there was a lot of hype around the film, which is not surprising, considering that not many films dealing with contemporary Hungarian politics are made these days. I understand that the creators wanted to show how even a small thing can blow up in the current political climate, but that makes the whole story a bit meaningless.

Also, while there are some funny/satirical moments, overall it is neither a comedy nor a drama

It is clear that the creators wanted to avoid disparaging one side (right-wing conservatives or left-wing liberals), but the film comes across as too cautious as a result. Still, there are some powerful scenes that show how deep the political divide is in the country right now.

I also liked the ambitious right-wing journalist, although her portrayal could have been more complex

Although the main character very effectively conveys how uncomfortable adolescence can be for many people, this character is too boring to even be remotely memorable. From this point of view, this film reminded me of Ferenc Török’s Moscow Square, also with unforgettable teenage characters.

The most complex character in the film is probably the right-wing father, and I liked István Znamenák’s portrayal

Interestingly, in the early 1980s, this actor played the teenage protagonist of the Hungarian cult film Megáll az ítí (Megáll az ítí), which contains many memorable teenage characters.
