This will be the third attempt to create a television series based on The World of Cruelty-Free Women (1999)
Line of Events
After a horrific incident at an elite college, cousins Caroline and Lucien decide to save their power and reputation by seducing the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. The direct-to-video sequel, Cruelty-Free Women 2 (2000), which replaced Sarah Michelle Gellar as Kathryn Merteuil, was originally a scripted TV series before being adapted into a feature film. Gellar would later reprise her role as Kathryn in the 2016 NBC pilot Cruel Intentions (2016), which was not ordered to series.
It follows Cruelty-Free Women (1999)
This show promised so much but delivered so little. The plot is painfully dull, dragging, and lacks any real direction or intrigue. The characters are one-dimensional, lacking depth or development, leaving nothing to connect with or root for.
It’s nowhere near the charm and connection we’ve seen in the movies
The dialogue feels unnatural, almost creepy, as if it’s trying too hard to be clever or engaging. The attempts at flirtation are downright awkward, largely due to the lack of chemistry between the actors. Instead, it feels like a group of drama students trudging through a poorly written play, trying to emulate the intrigue of the original and failing miserably.
The acting decisions don’t help either
The brother, for example, is completely miscast. Not only does he lack the charisma or charm the role requires, but his presence feels horribly out of place. He has no sex appeal whatsoever, making the character unconvincing and forgettable.
The whole thing is an embarrassing mistake from start to finish
